Worcester, Bosch is calling attention to new European Union rules that aim to introduce two new grades of oil into the UK. The manufacturer believes these changes could have a significant impact on oil installations and oil-fired domestic boilers. (14 Mar 10)

Further public education is needed in order to raise awareness of the benefits homeowners can expect if they install renewable energy technology in their homes, one sector commentator has asserted.

Such devices include solar panels, air and ground source heat pumps, but Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, said the general public continues to be sceptical when it comes to such technology.

However, he added it was important everyone learnt of the advantages of renewable energy as it was not only good for the environment but their pockets as well.

His comments follow a recent government announcement that Britons who invest in wind turbines or solar panels will receive up to £900 for the power they produce.

And this is even if they use the energy in their own homes, while it is expected anyone directing excess power back to the National Grid will receive an additional payment.

"I think it certainly will make the public look more at improving their homes and putting renewable technologies in them, especially as they are going to be able to gain some money back as a result of their investment," said Mr Leech. (13 Mar 10)

The possibility of achieving lower energy bills the main motivational force pushing homeowners to become more energy efficient, one sector commentator has claimed.

According to Dr Paula Owen, head of knowledge services for the Energy Saving Trust, over three-quarters of consumers claim it is the promise of paying less to power their homes which prompts them to take steps to reduce their carbon emissions - which may see them investing in a biomass boiler, ground source heat pump or solar panels.

"Around £8 billion of energy is wasted in the UK every year because of homes that are poorly insulated, have inefficient or poorly controlled heating systems and use electricity unnecessarily," she added.

Dr Owen stated there were simple steps Britons could take to both reduce their carbon footprint and save money, including replacing their old boiler with a condensing type.

Saving money in this way may be more important then ever, after moneysupermarket.com revealed a standard tariff winter energy bill for an average household has increased by 20 per cent, or £104, in just 12 months. (8 Mar 10)
